Why do we have gutters?

What is the purpose of gutters? We see them on all houses around greater Vancouver, but is there really a purpose to these gutters? They seem more like a hassle than a benefit, they fill up with dirt then you have to get them cleaned every year, they break then you have to fix them, you have to pay to replace them every 15 years, the list goes on with the different maintenance costs that you have to spend to upkeep these gutters!! It almost seems like an unnecessary expense.

To know the importance of gutters we first need to go back to the beginning of gutters, after all, how are we suppose to know the importance of gutters when all houses in greater Vancouver have gutters? We do not know how life was like without gutters.

In 27BC the Romans use to use rain gutters but it was not the same as the gutters we use today. The gutters we have today are gutters on houses the gutters in ancient Roman times were in the roads. There would be big gutters inroads to help stop the roads from flooding.  They also used the gutters to collect rainwater to use for drinking water.

Roman Gutters

Just like British Columbia, Brittan gets a lot of rain so it would be expected our BC older sister was the first Country to start putting gutters on houses. The Romans brought the idea in installing gutters on buildings to help direct the rain away from the houses.  The gutters were mainly put on churches and bigger buildings in the begging. The buildings roofs were built out of cement so they would carve out sections on the roof for the water to flow. Eventually, gutters started to be put on peoples homes, but they were not the same popular gutters style used today.  When people first started putting gutters on houses the gutters were made out of wood.

Back in the day wood gutter sample

Wood can be expensive and sometimes not as efficient so over time people started using a different material to build gutters. Around 1536 they started making lead gutters than almost 200 years later people started using cast iron material for gutters.

So why do we need gutters?

The reason why gutters were built was to drive rain away from peoples homes. If there were no gutters than gutters would seep into your home and cause damage to your walls and flooring in your home. Not to mention the uncomfortable situation entering your home and water pouring over your head every time.

It might be a pain to a small dent in your pocket for every time you need to clean your gutters or repair your gutters, but the dent in your pocket if you did not have gutters is even larger.

Should you hire a gutter cleaning company or a individual gutter cleaner?

Living in the lower mainland BC and if you own a home than you are probably familiar with gutter cleaning service. There is a variety of different kinds of gutter cleaning companies and services to choose from but what is the best way or route to go for your gutter cleaning needs.

Pros and Cons when working with a gutter cleaning company.

Pros:
When working with a gutter cleaning company you know what you are getting. Most companies will have some sort online presence so you can read their website and reviews that other people have posted about their past experience.  Most people only write reviews when they are angry so if a company has no bad reviews or only a few bad reviews that is good news.  Having a few bad reviews is okay because no company is perfect and someone is bound to happen once in a while.  Most gutter cleaning companies have Work Safe and liability insurance or else their technicians will have the coverage.  When working with a gutter cleaning company they are going to go the little extra mile to get the review or the referral. When working with a company their reputation is always on the line so they will go the extra mile to preserve their reputation. Most gutter cleaning companies will have a receptionist that is available for quotes and any questions you may have so a companies response time is normally much faster.

Cons:
When working with a company the prices sometimes can be double the price as working with an individual.

Pros and Cons working with an individual gutter cleaner other than a gutter cleaning company

Pros:
Working with an individual gutter cleaner other than a gutter cleaning company has a few perks. One perk is that you can start building a relationship with a person other than a company. Second, you can save sometimes half of what you would spend working with a company.

Cons:
When hiring an individual gutter cleaner other than a company you don't know who the person is or who is showing up to your home and you will not know if he is good or not because there will be no reviews to read about this person. An individual can say they can do something just for the money but when it comes down to it he actually can't do it. Some roofs can be dangerous with steep roofs and an individual might not be trained or knowledgeable in how to properly equipped them self. An individual gutter cleaner might not have liability insurance or work safe so if they hurt them self or damage your property you are not protected.

There are much more benefits in hiring a Professional gutter cleaner other than hiring an individual gutter cleaner as you can see the reasons I listed above.

Why you should clean moss off your roof

Why do I want to clean moss and algae off my roof?

In the Vancouver area because of the damp climate, it is a great atmosphere for moss and algae to grow on your roof and moss and algae on your roof is a great recipe for a weak and damaged roof. Over time the moist the moss absorbs will keep your roof and shingle wet, that will eventually eat away at your shingles and start making your roof wet and moist that will eventually lead to mold or hole in your roof. Algae and bacteria will eat away at your shingles that will lessen the lifespan of your shingles and eventually you would have to change then must sooner then if you were to just keep them clean in the first place

How to avoid have moss an algae growing on my roof?

If you want to avoid moss and algae growing on your roof the best way to avoid that is to get a roof cleaning done at least once a year. Getting the debris cleaned off every year will help to prevent moss and algae from growing on your roof.

What are the most common methods in cleaning moss and algae off your roof?

There are several methods for cleaning moss and algae off your roof that are common.

More affordable option for cleaning moss and algae off a roof -  Spraying your roof with a roof washing detergent and just letting it sit it will kill the bacteria and moss and over time the moss and algae will wash away with the rain. This can take up to 3 months to see the results.

Moss spot removal -  This is done by spraying moss killing detergent on the effective areas then brushing the moss and algae off your roof.

Deep roof cleaning -  When getting a deep roof cleaning in the end results you will get almost a new roof.  First, you have the moss killing detergent sprayed onto your roof. It has to let sit for 3 to 4 days and has to be done on a dry day. Then a light pressure of water is used to wash away all the moss and algae.

Can I have my roof cleaned on a rainy day?

When you are getting your roof cleaned it does have to be on a dry day because the chemicals have to sit and absorb into the roof.  The material of a roof no matter what kind of roof you have shingle, tile, or cedar it is a hard material, the hard material takes longer to absorb chemicals when cleaning. To get the best results in your roof cleaning it is best to let the chemicals sit on your roof for a few days before cleaning off the moss and algae.

Do I have to have my gutters cleaned when getting my roof cleaned?

When cleaning moss off your roof, the moss will get into your gutters, so yes you do need to get your gutters cleaned if you are getting your roof cleaned.

What is the average price of roof cleaning?

Roof cleaning can vary from what you want done. If you want just a simple roof blow, blowing debris off your roof on an average size house can vary from $50 to $150. If you are getting moss spot removal on a normal size house it depends on how much moss you have on your roof but the price can be anywhere from $300 to $800. If you are wanting a deep clean of your whole roof then the price can range from $1000 to $2000 depending on your roof type, how large your roof is, and how steep your roof is.

What is the common roof cleaning detergent used to clean moss off roofs?

If you are looking for the most eco-friendly option there are several options on the market that are eco-friendly and do not contain toxic chemicals such as chlorine-bleach, phosphates or other chemicals that can kill vegetation and pollute waterways. When using an eco-friendly option the best is to use a low-pressure wash after to wash away all the moss and algae.

Some roof cleaners will make their own roof cleaner to save money that would be sodium hypochlorite (chlorine bleach) mix it in high concentrations with other chemicals such as trisodium phosphate, also known as TSP.  Using this method is not effective and you would need to get the roof sprayed a few times in order to get the best results. Roof cleaners don't generally tell their customers they are using this method. If you want to make sure the roof cleaner is using a better product ask the roof cleaner to supply you with a receipt or show you the bottle.

There are several products on the market that are eco-friendly for cleaning roof such as.
  • Roof wash
  • Wash Safe
  • RoofOX
  • Roof Cleaner Qse
  • Defy roof cleaner
  • Spray & forget roof cleaner
These are just some of the most popular roof cleaning products but not the only roof cleaning products.

Quick Sidekick Offering Molding & Framing

Quick Sidekick your local handyman service is offering free estimates for molding and framing for homes. We have a professional handyman that experienced with carpentry and have years of experience. Offering a variety of a different kind of trimming for your home or office exterior or interior trimming.

Quick Sidekick is offering exterior window trimming installation for the outside of your home and exterior door trim for the outside of your house.

Above pictures are an exterior window and door trim that we installed last week in a Vancouver home.  This was a simple design but we can offer a more decorative trim for your outside framing.

Here is a sample of a framing that was done in Surrey for a nook in the wall where the customer had put their TV.  In this framing, we did a casing for the top of the molding and then had a thicker molding along the sides and flow into the baseboards on the ground.

This customer we did a dark cherry wood crown molding and casing around the doors. You can see in the middle of the door frame put a little design.

When you are deciding to get modeling put into your home make sure you work with someone that has experience and knows what they are doing. There are a lot of bad contractors out there and we have had to come in and fix bad molding jobs.

When we are installing baseboards we make sure they are installed seamlessly with out lines. Some bad contractors don't care if there are lines in the middle of your baseboard. Here is a picture that we took when we were called to fix a bad renovation job, that had a few issues with the renovations. The baseboards were a bad installation but unfortunately, it was not worth it for the customer to fix the baseboard because we had to fix so many issues from the bad renovations that were done.

This is a bad baseboard installation we were called in to fix this week. As you can see the person who installed the baseboards left spaces and did not install it properly now we have to measure and get the right sizes and reinstall the baseboards properly.

When we are installing trimming and frames we make sure everything is done right the first time up to our customer's satisfaction.
